What to Pack for Your Dog’s Boarding Stay

Preparing your pup for a stress-free, home-style boarding experience

Heading out of town and leaving your dog in the care of a trusted sitter? With the right preparation, your dog’s stay away from home can be relaxing, enriching, and even enjoyable. At Burbank Pet Sitting, we offer boarding designed to feel like a second home—not a kennel. And that homey experience starts with smart packing.

Here’s what you should pack to help make their time away smooth, stress-free, and comfortable.

1. Food & Treats

Pack enough of your dog’s regular food to last the entire stay, plus a little extra—just in case of travel delays or schedule changes.

Include:

  • Pre-measured portions (in labeled bags or containers)

  • Any supplements or additives

  • Favorite treats (especially for training or comforting)

Changing a dog’s diet suddenly can cause stomach upset. Sticking with their usual food keeps things predictable and easy on their system.

2. Familiar Bedding or Blanket

Your dog will sleep better with something that smells like home. A bed, blanket, or even a well-loved towel can help them feel secure.

Tips:

  • Choose an item that’s easy to wash

  • Avoid overstuffed beds unless your pup is gentle with them

  • If they’re crate-trained, bring their crate for added comfort

3. Favorite Toys or Comfort Items

A toy from home can offer both entertainment and emotional comfort, especially during the first night or two.

Pack:

  • One or two durable chew toys

  • A comfort item (stuffed toy or “snuggle buddy”)

  • Puzzle toys or slow feeders if part of their routine

4. Medications and Instructions

If your dog takes any medications—daily or as-needed—be sure to pack them in original containers with clear, written instructions.

Include:

  • Dosage schedule

  • Method of administration (pill pockets, mixed with food, etc.)

  • Any special notes or side effects to watch for

At Burbank Pet Sitting, we’re experienced with administering oral, topical, and time-sensitive medications.

5. Updated Care Instructions

Even if your sitter knows your dog well, it’s helpful to provide a written summary of their routine, personality, and needs.

Your care note should include:

  • Feeding times and portion sizes

  • Walk schedule and energy level

  • Behavioral quirks (e.g., anxiety triggers, food guarding, leash reactivity)

  • Emergency contact info and your vet’s name/number

6. Leash, Collar, and ID Tags

Always send your dog with their collar, current ID tag, and a leash that’s comfortable for both dog and sitter. A harness may be helpful for pullers or dogs with sensitive necks.

Less Is More

We recommend packing light but thoughtfully. The goal is to bring items that comfort and support your dog—not overwhelm them or clutter the sitter’s space. Labeling items clearly is always appreciated.
